Arsenal win Premier League: Arteta’s side end 22-year wait for title

72

Arsenal have been confirmed as Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years.

After finishing as runners-up on three occasions, the Gunners finally secured first place following Manchester City’s 1-1 draw away to Bournemouth on Tuesday night.

Although Arsenal had led the standings for most of the season, their challenge appeared to falter in April when Manchester City closed the gap. A 2-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium seemed to shift momentum toward City, but Arsenal recovered strongly and managed to stay ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side to clinch the title for the first time since the unbeaten 2003/04 “Invincibles” campaign.

This achievement ends a six-year trophy drought and marks Mikel Arteta’s second major trophy as manager at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal could still add more success this season, with the Champions League still to be decided. They are set to face reigning champions PSG in the final in Budapest on Saturday, May 30, with kick-off at 5pm.

More updates are expected.

When will Arsenal receive the trophy?

Arsenal will be handed the Premier League trophy after their final match of the season against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

When did Arsenal last win the Premier League?

The wait has been a long one for the club.

Their previous league title came in the 2003/04 season, when Arsène Wenger’s squad went the entire campaign unbeaten.

That was the third league title under Wenger, achieved with 26 wins and 12 draws, earning them the famous “Invincibles” status.
