Anthony Gordon has called his transfer to Barcelona “a dream come true” after signing a five-year contract with the reigning LaLiga champions.

The England international completed his move from Newcastle United on Friday, with reports suggesting Barcelona paid €80m (£69.3m) to secure his signature.

Gordon, now 25, arrived at Newcastle from Everton in 2023 and quickly became a fan favourite at St. James’ Park. During his time with the Magpies, he made 152 appearances across all competitions.

Among Newcastle players, only Alexander Isak registered more goal involvements than Gordon’s 60. Gordon scored 39 goals despite accumulating an expected goals (xG) figure of 44.1.

He also enjoyed an impressive 2025-26 Champions League campaign, scoring 10 goals, including one against Barcelona during the league phase. That achievement made him only the second English player to reach double digits for goals in a single Champions League season, following Harry Kane the previous year.

“I’m very excited and very proud to be here. It’s a dream come true. I’m part of the best team in the world, thank you,” Gordon said.

The forward immediately impressed at his official presentation by responding to several reporters’ questions in Spanish.

Although Bayern Munich were reportedly interested in signing him, Gordon revealed that once Barcelona expressed their interest, no other destination was under consideration.

“I always wanted Barca,” Gordon added. “Barca, like I said then, it’s the biggest club on the planet. It’s the stuff I dreamed of as a child. It really is a dream come true.”

Gordon becomes Barcelona’s first signing of the summer as the club looks to strengthen a squad that secured the LaLiga title last season. Changes in attack could also be on the way.

Robert Lewandowski ended his successful spell with the Blaugrana following the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign, while Gordon has previously featured as a central striker under Eddie Howe.

Marcus Rashford, who enjoyed a productive loan spell last season, continues to be linked with a permanent move, while Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez is reportedly another target.

Barcelona supporters had to wait longer than expected for confirmation of Gordon’s arrival. The club initially announced that the transfer would be revealed at midday on Friday.

However, the official confirmation did not arrive until more than eight hours later. Asked whether the delay had been frustrating, Gordon said: “No, I knew it would happen.

“I’ve been very calm at the hotel, just waiting with my family, with my agents, but I was very excited, so it was kind of hard to wait. I can’t explain (the delay).

“I don’t know, it’s stuff I don’t understand. All my part was done. I’ve been ready for two days now, so it was stuff above me, I think, legal things and the very small details.”
