The Lagos State Government has joined the rest of the world in marking the 2026 World Environment Day, using the occasion to call on residents to play their part in keeping the state clean and environmentally safe.
The global event, observed annually, focuses on raising awareness about environmental protection and encouraging actions that support sustainability and the preservation of natural resources.
In a message shared on Friday via his X handle, the Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reiterated the state’s commitment to improving environmental conditions through stronger sanitation efforts, waste management reforms, enforcement of environmental rules, and public education campaigns.
He said Lagos, as a rapidly growing megacity, remains focused on building a cleaner and safer environment through consistent environmental initiatives and stronger compliance with sanitation standards.
The government also stressed that environmental protection cannot be achieved by government alone, but requires cooperation from all residents, including business owners, traders, and community leaders.
Officials reminded residents that keeping the environment clean is a shared duty that demands responsible behaviour from everyone living in the state.
They urged people to properly dispose of waste and avoid actions such as dumping refuse indiscriminately or blocking drainage channels, which worsen flooding and environmental degradation.
The state government further noted that enforcement of environmental laws is ongoing, with agencies taking action against illegal dumping sites, street trading in restricted areas, and other violations that pose risks to public health and urban order.
Residents were encouraged to support government efforts by embracing cleaner habits, including recycling and proper waste management practices.
Authorities also emphasized that achieving a sustainable and cleaner Lagos depends on continuous collaboration between the government and the public.
They concluded that a greener and healthier Lagos can only be achieved through shared responsibility and consistent action from all stakeholders.
