Military pensioners advised to beware of fraudsters posing as officials

The Military Pension Board has cautioned pensioners and their families to be wary of fraudsters posing as pension officials and seeking access to confidential personal information.

The warning followed reports that some individuals have been contacting retirees and next of kin with false promises related to pension services while requesting sensitive details.

In a statement issued by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Squadron Leader Aliyu Mohammed, the agency said scammers are targeting pensioners for information such as BVNs, NINs, bank account numbers and ATM card details.

“The Board has received reports that some individuals are demanding personal details such as Bank Verification Numbers, National Identification Numbers, bank account details, ATM card information, and other confidential data,” the statement said.

The board stressed that pensioners should ignore any requests for such information from unauthorised persons or platforms.

“Pensioners are strongly advised not to disclose such information to any individual, group, or platform that is not officially authorised by the Military Pensions Board,” it added.

It also clarified that all pension-related processes are handled directly by the board and not through agents or third-party organisations.

“The Military Pensions Board does not engage third parties to collect pensioners’ personal or banking information for the purpose of processing loans, pension payments, gratuities, or any other benefits,” the statement said.

The agency urged retirees to remain alert and promptly report suspicious approaches to relevant authorities.

“Any request for such information from unofficial sources should be treated with caution and reported to the appropriate authorities,” the board warned.

The board reiterated its commitment to protecting pensioners from fraudulent schemes and encouraged beneficiaries to verify all communications through official channels before taking any action.
