The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says recent bandit attacks in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State have left thousands of residents displaced as they continue to flee their homes in search of safety.

This was contained in a statement shared on Wednesday via the agency’s official X account, following an assessment carried out by its Sokoto Operations Office on victims of the attacks.

The assessment was conducted after a series of violent incidents recorded on June 7 and 9, 2026, in Dan Gulbi community, where several people were reportedly killed during armed bandit incursions.

According to NEMA, the situation has led to widespread displacement across affected communities, with many residents seeking refuge in schools and nearby settlements.

“Findings from the assessment revealed that the recurring attacks have displaced thousands of residents, forcing them to flee their homes in search of safety,” the agency said.

The agency noted that many displaced persons are currently taking shelter in Tureta town, including at JNI Primary School and Abdulbaki Model Primary School, while others have relocated to Tsamiya Ward, Duma Ward, and neighbouring communities within the area.

It also stated that some victims have crossed into Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State for safety.

NEMA further reported that another attack on Achi Asha Ruwa community was also recorded during the assessment period, leading to additional casualties.

“The assessment further indicated that thousands of people have been affected by the violence, with some individuals sustaining varying degrees of injuries.

“Several shops and means of livelihood were also reportedly looted and destroyed during the attacks, worsening the humanitarian situation in the affected communities,” it stated.

The agency added that ongoing insecurity has made access to some of the affected areas difficult, thereby limiting humanitarian response efforts.

“The assessment team observed that access to several affected locations remains difficult due to the prevailing security challenges, posing significant constraints to humanitarian assessment and response operations,” NEMA said.

It explained that it is working with relevant stakeholders and security agencies to determine the full extent of the impact and provide support to affected communities.
