The Federal Government has secured the release of six Nigerians who were detained in Côte d’Ivoire over alleged economic offences since October 2025.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed on Friday that four of the detainees were released on June 22, while the remaining two regained their freedom a day later following sustained diplomatic and consular efforts.
In a statement, the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, credited the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan for engaging relevant Ivorian authorities to facilitate the release.
The ministry commended Nigeria’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Ambassador Nwabiola Ezenwa, and embassy officials for their commitment and professionalism throughout the process.
“The Embassy maintained regular consular access to the detained Nigerians, ensured their welfare throughout their detention, and engaged consistently with the Ivorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, and other relevant institutions to secure their release,” the statement said.
The Federal Government also appreciated the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation, noting that the strong bilateral relationship between both countries contributed to the successful resolution of the matter.
Reaffirming its commitment to Nigerians abroad, the ministry said the protection, welfare and dignity of citizens remain a key priority of Nigeria’s foreign policy.
It urged Nigerians living and travelling overseas to obey the laws of their host countries and maintain contact with the nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate when necessary.
