Suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents on Monday stormed Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, abducting an unspecified number of students sitting for the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.

The attackers reportedly invaded the school around 9 a.m., firing sporadically and creating panic among students, teachers and residents before taking several candidates into the bush.

A teacher was reportedly killed during the assault, while another sustained injuries.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said authorities were still working to determine the exact number of students abducted, with some others yet to be accounted for.

“At about 9 a.m., an unspecified number of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists attacked a secondary school and shot sporadically into the air. During the attack, an unspecified number of students were abducted, while some are still missing,” Daso said.

He noted that the police could not immediately verify reports of fatalities beyond the injured victims.

Security forces, including the Nigerian Army, the Civilian Joint Task Force and the area command in Askira/Uba, have launched a joint search-and-rescue operation and are combing nearby forests to locate the abducted students and track down the attackers.

Further details are expected as the operation continues.
