Côte d’Ivoire’s World Cup journey came to an end after a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Norway in their Round of 32 clash on Tuesday.
A late goal from Erling Haaland shattered Ivorian hopes at Dallas Stadium, sealing Norway’s first-ever win in a World Cup knockout match.
The Elephants delivered a spirited display, fighting back after conceding first, but were undone by Norway’s clinical finishing.
Norway took the lead in the 39th minute through Antonio Nusa, who found space inside the Ivorian box before calmly slotting the ball past Yahia Fofana to reward his side’s early pressure.
Côte d’Ivoire returned stronger in the second half, showing greater urgency in search of an equaliser. Coach Emerse Fae introduced Amad Diallo in the 59th minute, and the substitution quickly made an impact.
In the 74th minute, Diallo pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area and fired home the equaliser, sending Ivorian supporters into celebration.
With extra time appearing inevitable, Haaland made the decisive difference after being rested in Norway’s final group-stage match against France.
The Manchester City striker capitalised on a defensive lapse in the 85th minute, drilling a low finish beyond Fofana to restore Norway’s lead and secure victory.
Despite late pressure from Nicolas Pépé and Franck Kessié, the Elephants failed to find another equaliser before the final whistle.
With the win, Norway progresses to the Round of 16, where they will face Brazil.
