World Cup: Arias fires Colombia past Ghana into last 16

Colombia national football team booked their place in the World Cup Round of 16 with a deserved 1-0 victory over Ghana national football team in Kansas City on Friday.

An early strike from Jhon Arias proved decisive as Nestor Lorenzo’s men controlled large spells of the Round of 32 encounter and limited Ghana’s attacking opportunities.

Colombia will now face Switzerland national football team on Tuesday for a place in the quarter-finals.

Both teams suffered injury setbacks in the opening stages, with Jhon Cordoba leaving the pitch before Ghana defender Marvin Senaya was also forced off.

The interruptions did little to halt Colombia’s momentum as they took the lead in the 14th minute. Substitute Luis Suarez had an initial cross blocked by Gideon Mensah, but his second delivery found Arias unmarked at the far post, allowing him to guide the ball into the bottom corner.

Colombia continued to dominate before the break. James Rodriguez created a chance for Luis Diaz, who struck the side netting, while Suarez headed wide and Johan Mojica was denied by a fine save from goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi.

Ati Zigi remained busy after the restart, producing important saves to keep out Gustavo Puerta and Diaz, whose sliding finish was later ruled out for offside.

Ghana struggled to create meaningful chances, with their best opportunity seeing Antoine Semenyo send an effort across goal without finding a teammate in the box.

Colombia continued to threaten a second goal as Juan Fernando Quintero tested the goalkeeper from distance and Davinson Sanchez was denied from a header.

Despite their spirited display, Ghana failed to register a shot on target throughout the contest and never looked likely to force extra time.

The victory marks Colombia’s first World Cup knockout triumph since defeating Uruguay in the 2014 Round of 16 and further strengthens their credentials as one of the tournament’s dark horses.

Arias’ winner, scored after 13 minutes and 49 seconds, stands as the second-fastest goal in Colombia’s World Cup history, behind only Pablo Armero’s strike against Greece in 2014.

The 28-year-old also became just the second player from Brazil’s Serie A to score in a World Cup knockout match this century, following Robinho’s goals for Brazil in 2010.

Colombia finished with a commanding advantage in both shots (20-8) and expected goals (2.19 to 0.26), underlining their superiority over a Ghana side that exited the competition without recording a shot on target in the match.
