The House of Representatives descended into a rowdy session on Wednesday as lawmakers clashed over a motion seeking to summon President Bola Tinubu to explain the alleged non-funding of constituency projects.
The motion, sponsored by Alex Mascot Ikwechegh (LP, Abia), called on the President to appear before the House over the continued delay in releasing funds for constituency projects nationwide.
The motion was seconded, while another lawmaker proposed an amendment urging the House to suspend plenary for one week until the matter was resolved.
The proposals triggered a heated debate among lawmakers.
Yusuf Gagdi (APC, Plateau) opposed the motion, arguing that there was no justification for inviting the President since the implementation and funding of constituency projects fall under the responsibility of the relevant ministries, departments and agencies.
He also opposed the suggestion to suspend plenary for a week, describing it as unnecessary.
Gagdi’s remarks sparked resistance from some members, leading to shouting and disorder on the floor of the House.
As the situation became increasingly tense, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas intervened and directed lawmakers to vote on the matter to determine the House’s position.
