- Florida’s main airport in Palm Beach has officially been renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport, following the implementation of a state law approved earlier this year.
- The change took effect on Thursday, replacing the airport’s previous name, Palm Beach International Airport. The facility is located close to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, where he has spent much of his time.
- Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the legislation authorising the renaming after it was passed by the state’s Republican-controlled legislature. Officials said the transition, including replacing signs and updating airport systems, is expected to cost about $5.5 million.
- Although the airport has adopted the new name, travellers will continue using the familiar PBI airport code for bookings until August 18, when the new DJT code is scheduled to take effect.
- The first aircraft to arrive after the renaming was Trump’s private jet, widely known as Trump Force One, carrying his son, Eric Trump, who described the move as a significant honour for the president.
- The decision has generated mixed reactions across the United States. Supporters say it recognises Trump’s longstanding ties to Palm Beach and his political influence in Florida, while critics argue public infrastructure should not be renamed after a serving president for political reasons.
