Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that he broke down in tears after visiting former President Muhammadu Buhari in a London hospital during the final days of his life, describing the experience as one of the most emotional moments of his public service.
Speaking at a one-year remembrance event for the late president, Shettima said President Bola Tinubu personally directed him to travel to London to ensure Buhari received every necessary support.
“The President called me and said, ‘Kashim, I’ve just learnt that President Muhammadu Buhari is ill in London. Please proceed to London, find out what is happening, and ensure he lacks nothing.'”
Recalling the visit, Shettima said he was overwhelmed by Buhari’s condition.
“I came out with tears in my eyes and met Zara and Yusuf at the door of the Intensive Care Unit. It was a moving spectacle. It was an emotional moment.”
He added that escorting Buhari’s body back to Nigeria after his death remained one of the greatest honours of his life.
The remembrance ceremony in Abuja marked one year since Buhari’s death in London on December 13, 2025. His remains were later returned to Nigeria and buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
Representing President Tinubu at the event, Shettima delivered the President’s tribute, assuring Buhari’s family of the Federal Government’s continued support.
Tinubu described Buhari as a steadfast patriot and longtime political ally who devoted his life to national service.
“He gave everything he had to this country, and he gave it without reservation. He served with courage, conviction and patriotism.”
The President also praised Buhari for retaining the trust and affection of ordinary Nigerians even after leaving office, describing it as a rare achievement in public service.
Former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon remembered Buhari as a gallant soldier committed to Nigeria’s unity and commended his political partnership with Tinubu, noting that Buhari supported Tinubu’s emergence as his successor.
Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, represented by his deputy, described Buhari as the state’s “moral compass,” saying his integrity, modest lifestyle and commitment to public service should serve as an enduring example for future leaders.
Several serving and former government officials, governors, traditional rulers and political associates attended the memorial, while former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha announced plans by Buhari’s family to establish the Muhammadu Buhari Foundation and Centre to preserve the late leader’s legacy and contributions to Nigeria.
