The Anambra State Government has begun preparations for its 2027 fiscal plan with the inauguration of a budget committee tasked with producing a transparent, realistic and people-oriented appropriation.
The committee was inaugurated on Friday by the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Chukwukadibia Okoye, during a ceremony held at the Inter-Agency Board Room of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.
Speaking at the event, Okoye urged committee members to work together and carry out their duties with commitment, noting that the budget should focus on accountability, prudent spending and projects that address the real needs of residents.
He said the state’s annual budget plays a vital role in transforming government policies into practical results and should support Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s development plans through projects that make a measurable difference.
“The ministry opted for a physical inauguration to build teamwork and shared ownership. Members are reminded that their selection was merit-based and that they must serve the collective interest of Anambra.
“We urge members to prioritise evidence-based project selection that reflects the genuine needs and aspirations of the people. Projects must be selected on merit and based on their developmental impact.
“Members must prioritise early budget preparation, effective synergy among Ministries, Departments and Agencies, accurate costing and realistic projections as these are essential components of a credible budget process,” he said.
Okoye also drew attention to pressing issues facing the state, especially erosion, urging the committee to prioritise projects that offer lasting solutions to critical challenges.
Expressing confidence in the committee’s ability, he said members have the responsibility to prepare a budget capable of driving sustainable growth across Anambra.
“Key directives to the committee are discipline, integrity and transparency at every stage. Evidence-based projects. No inflation, no duplication. Prioritise completion of ongoing projects.
“Realistic projections, accurate costing, early prep, stronger MDA synergy, grow IGR, attract donor support, and spend prudently, smart prioritisation of critical needs like erosion control,” he added.
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Chinyere Nwabachili, later unveiled the timetable for the 2027 budget preparation, explaining the stages from community consultations to legislative consideration.
The ministry also assured the committee of the necessary support required to deliver a budget that reflects the priorities and aspirations of the people of Anambra State.
