Chelsea have secured the services of French defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a transfer valued at £52 million.
According to BBC Sport on Thursday, the 26-year-old centre-back has agreed to a contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032, making him Chelsea’s third signing of the current summer transfer window.
Lacroix, who has been capped seven times by France, arrived at Crystal Palace from Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg in 2024 for an initial £15.5 million. He swiftly established himself as a key player under manager Oliver Glasner.
Last season, the defender featured in 55 matches across all competitions as Palace lifted the UEFA Conference League title, earning the club its first major European trophy.
He also made three appearances for France during the 2026 World Cup, including the third-place play-off against England, with Les Bleus ending the tournament in fourth place.
The French defender joins Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra as Chelsea’s latest additions ahead of the club’s first campaign under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea viewed Lacroix as a top transfer target amid concerns about their defensive displays and the desire to strengthen the backline with greater physical presence and leadership.
While other defensive options, including former Manchester City centre-back John Stones and Como defender Jacopo Ramon, were assessed, Lacroix ultimately became Chelsea’s first-choice recruit.
Talks between Chelsea and Crystal Palace over the transfer fee and personal terms took time to conclude, but the defender gave his approval after France completed their World Cup campaign.
His signing signals Chelsea’s evolving recruitment policy following a disappointing season that saw the club finish 10th in the Premier League without claiming any silverware.
Co-owner Behdad Eghbali had earlier stated that Chelsea intended to refine their transfer strategy by introducing more experienced players to complement young stars such as Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill.
Lacroix is now the oldest player signed by Chelsea since the current ownership group took charge, underlining the club’s commitment to bringing in more proven talent.
The Blues also considered signing Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka, although that proposed move failed to materialise.
Together with Morgan Rogers, who recently celebrated his 24th birthday, Lacroix’s arrival aligns with Chelsea’s objective of adding more established players before the start of the new season.
