Gunmen have reportedly ambushed a joint security patrol in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing a police inspector and an Air Force corporal during an early morning attack.
The incident occurred around 5 a.m. on Tuesday after four security personnel from two guard locations mounted a snap roadblock along the Ganawuri–Sabon Gida Road.
Community sources said the operatives came under attack while returning to their duty posts. When two officers failed to return, security forces immediately launched a search operation.
The bodies of the missing personnel were later recovered, while their service weapons were reportedly taken by the attackers.
A resident, identified as Catherine, said the slain officers’ motorcycle was recovered at the scene. She added that preliminary findings suggested the ambush occurred near an area previously occupied by Fulani herders, close to a native settlement.
Following the attack, security agencies launched cordon-and-search operations across nearby communities to track down the suspects and recover the stolen weapons.
The spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, could not be reached for comment. However, a security source at the command headquarters confirmed that investigations into the incident were ongoing.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement as efforts continue to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
