A 100-level student of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, has reportedly been shot on campus by suspected cultists.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, just two days after rival cult groups allegedly engaged in a shooting spree on the university campus, heightening tension among students.
The Monday confrontation was reportedly linked to a supremacy battle between suspected members of the Vikings and Ku Klux Klan cult groups.
Details surrounding Wednesday’s shooting remained unclear as of the time of filing the report. However, a source close to the victim said the student had been taken to a hospital, where doctors were attempting to remove bullet pellets lodged in his body.
The source, who withheld both the victim’s identity and their own name because of the sensitive nature of the incident, said, “His close friends were contributing money to raise funds for the surgery to happen.”
It could not be independently established whether the injured student belonged to any cult group.
A video circulating online also showed the injured student on a hospital bed before his coursemates reportedly carried him into the university premises.
The Rivers State Police Command had earlier confirmed Monday’s cult clash. Its spokesperson, Blessing Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the command was investigating the incident.
Asked about Wednesday’s shooting, Agabe said she had seen the viral video and would obtain further information from the Divisional Police Officer responsible for the area. However, she had not provided an update as of Wednesday evening.
Following the development, the university management suspended all remaining activities scheduled for the Students’ Union Government Week and directed students to resume normal academic activities on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The directive was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday by the university Registrar, Dr Chinonye Ajie.
Management warned students who failed to attend lectures that they would be held responsible for their actions and urged them to avoid activities that could disrupt their studies or threaten peace on campus.
“This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect.
“Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday, August 13th, 2026, for normal academic activities.
“Any student who fails to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions.
“Students are also strongly warned to desist from any action that is inimical to their academic pursuit and the peace of the University.”
