Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has paid a surprise congratulatory visit to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke following his victory in the state’s governorship election.

Adeleke was declared the winner of the election on Sunday after securing 511,067 votes across the state.

The incumbent governor, who contested under the platform of the Accord Party, defeated his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 444,815 votes.

Adeleke won in 19 of Osun State’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in 11.

The governor recorded victories in Ede North, Ede South, Ejigbo, Iwo, Egbedore, Ife North, Ife East, Ife Central, Oriade, Ifelodun, Orolu, Ayedaade, Ayedire, Odo-Otin, Boluwaduro, Ilesa West, Ifedayo and Osogbo, among other local government areas.

Obasanjo’s visit came only hours after Adeleke was formally declared winner of the closely contested poll, giving him a fresh four-year mandate to continue as governor of the state.

The former president’s visit also added to the wave of reactions and congratulatory messages that have followed Adeleke’s re-election.
