Real Madrid have revived their interest in Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi, with new head coach Jose Mourinho reportedly approving a potential move for the Spain international.
Zubimendi, 27, joined Arsenal last summer after the Gunners completed a €65 million deal with Real Sociedad.
The midfielder played a key role during his first season in north London, but his involvement declined considerably towards the end of the campaign. He started only one of Arsenal’s final matches and was overlooked in favour of Myles Lewis-Skelly in midfield, including during the Champions League final.
With Bruno Guimaraes also joining Arsenal, concerns have reportedly emerged within Zubimendi’s camp that he may no longer be as important to Mikel Arteta’s plans as he had anticipated.
According to reports, discussions have taken place with Arsenal as Zubimendi’s representatives assess his situation and consider possible options away from the club.
Arsenal are understood to be open to allowing the midfielder to leave if a suitable offer arrives, rather than treating him as an untouchable member of the squad.
That stance has reportedly encouraged Real Madrid to re-enter the race for the midfielder.
The Spanish giants have admired Zubimendi for some time and had previously identified Manchester City midfielder Rodri as a major target. However, Rodri is now reportedly close to joining Barcelona.
Mourinho is said to want greater experience and authority in Real Madrid’s holding midfield position, with Zubimendi viewed as a player who fits the Portuguese manager’s requirements.
Contact has reportedly been established over the midfielder, while sources claim Zubimendi would welcome the opportunity to return to Spain and join Real Madrid.
However, any potential deal will depend heavily on Arsenal’s valuation and whether Madrid are willing to meet the asking price for a player who joined the Gunners only a year ago.
Real Madrid are also considering Zubimendi as part of a broader midfield restructuring.
The club reportedly sees the Arsenal midfielder as an ideal addition who could help facilitate Eduardo Camavinga’s departure, with the French midfielder allegedly informed earlier this summer that he could leave after falling out of favour.
