FG deploys eight transformers to add 780MVA to Lagos grid

The Federal Government has boosted electricity transmission in Lagos by commissioning eight transformer projects capable of adding 780MVA to the state’s power network.

The projects, located at transmission substations in Apapa, Ijora, Alausa and Lekki, are expected to improve bulk electricity supply to homes, businesses and industrial facilities.

The installations comprise two 60MVA transformers at Apapa, two 100MVA units at Ijora, one 100MVA transformer at Alausa, and three transformers at Lekki, including a 300MVA unit and two 60MVA units.

According to the government, the projects provide 540MVA of additional capacity at the 132kV level, capable of wheeling 432MW, while the 330kV installations contribute another 300MVA with an estimated 240MW transmission capability.

Power Minister, Joseph Tegbe, said the investments were aimed at tackling transmission limitations and supporting economic activities across Lagos.

“They represent targeted investments in capacity, capacity for businesses to grow, capacity for industries to produce, and capacity for communities to prosper,” he stated.

At Lekki, the intervention raised the 330/132kV transformer capacity from 300MVA to 600MVA, while capacity at the 132/33kV level increased from 120MVA to 240MVA.

The project also introduced nine additional 33kV feeders to facilitate the distribution of the increased bulk power through the Eko Electricity Distribution Company network.

Tegbe said the Lekki project was particularly significant because of the area’s rapid residential, commercial and industrial development.

“Lekki represents the Nigeria we are building towards, a more industrial, more commercially active, more connected to global markets and increasingly attractive to domestic and international capital. As investment flows into a corridor such as this, electricity infrastructure cannot be an afterthought,” he said.

At Alausa, a new 100MVA transformer increased the substation’s total capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA. The project also raised the bulk electricity available to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company by 80MW.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria Managing Director, Sule Abdulaziz, said the Alausa upgrade would improve electricity supply to at least 70,000 residents in the area and nearby communities.

“This installation replaces the substation’s existing 1x30MVA, 132/33kV transformer, increasing its capacity by 70MVA and raising total substation capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA,” Abdulaziz said.

He added that the World Bank-funded project, executed by Shanghai Electric Ltd, would “deliver more stable and reliable power to at least 70,000 residents across Alausa and its environs, through the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.”

Meanwhile, a 2x60MVA gas-insulated substation was also commissioned at Apapa. The facility, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, is expected to increase bulk power availability in the Apapa axis by about 96MW.

The Federal Government said the projects formed part of broader efforts by TCN to expand and modernise the national transmission network as electricity demand continues to rise.
