The Peoples Democratic Party and the Allied Peoples Movement in Ekiti State have begun grassroots mobilisation for the presidential ambition of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
Stakeholders from both parties gathered in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on Thursday to map out strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The exercise was led by PDP chieftain and convener of the alliance in the state, Mrs Lanre Fajuyi, who said Makinde “represents the kind of leadership the country needs at the present time.”
The governor emerged as the APM presidential candidate after the PDP and APM formalised their alliance in May 2026.
Addressing participants drawn from the 16 Local Government Areas during the ‘APM Awareness Campaign’, Fajuyi said “the initiative was motivated by the need to mobilise Nigerians for a credible alternative to the current administration.”
She said the programme was designed to engage PDP and APM members, women, youths, artisans and other groups on strengthening the alliance and building support for Makinde.
She said, “Nigerians are yearning for a government that will genuinely serve the interests of the masses, promote democratic governance, and address the economic and social challenges confronting the country.
“Makinde represents the kind of leadership the country needs at the present time. I’m calling on the PDP and APM members across Ekiti to begin early grassroots mobilisation for his emergence as president in 2027.
“We need a government that is genuinely ready and willing to assist the masses, and provide democratic governance that will serve the interests of the people.
“We have looked around and asked ourselves who can provide the kind of leadership that Nigeria needs at this critical time. We believe that Governor Makinde is the right person for the position of the President of Nigeria, come 2027.”
The PDP/APM South-West spokesperson, Sanya Atofarati, said the alliance was aimed at protecting multi-party democracy while providing opposition groups with a stronger platform ahead of the elections.
He described the APM as an increasingly viable political platform in Ekiti and said the alliance would enable PDP members and other opposition politicians to participate actively in the elections.
He said, “The beauty of democracy lies in the multi-party system. What we are witnessing today is a joint alliance between the PDP and the APM because we understand the legal impediments and sanctions currently confronting the PDP.
“In view of this, it is only wise for PDP members to seek a more viable alternative platform in the interest of those who intend to contest one position or another under the party,” Atofarati said.
Also speaking, the APM Vice Chairman in Ekiti State, Remilekun Solola, described the partnership as an important strategy for building a formidable opposition ahead of the 2027 polls.
