Danny Welbeck marked his Chelsea debut with a goal as Xabi Alonso’s team secured a 2-0 victory over a determined Luton Town side to book their place in the third round of the EFL Cup on Thursday.

Luton, now competing in the third tier, produced a disciplined defensive display at Stamford Bridge, frustrating Chelsea for much of the opening half. However, Welbeck eventually broke the deadlock shortly after the restart before Hakeem Odoffin’s unfortunate own goal sealed the result.
After winning their opening two competitive matches under Alonso, Chelsea will next meet Leeds United in an all-Premier League third-round encounter next month.
Chelsea dominated possession and spent most of the first half around the Luton penalty area, but their 17 attempts before the break failed to trouble goalkeeper Josh Keeley.
Morgan Rogers came closest to putting Chelsea ahead when his stoppage-time effort struck the crossbar. Estevao also missed the target after finding himself through on goal, while Reece James forced a quality save from Keeley following a cleverly worked free-kick.
Luton’s resistance lasted only five minutes into the second half. Welbeck connected brilliantly with Malo Gusto’s cross from the right, sending a powerful header beyond Keeley to make it 1-0.
The former Brighton striker then missed an opportunity to double his tally after being played through by Palmer. Palmer himself later came close when his curling 20-yard effort dipped onto the top of the crossbar.
Luton’s hopes of mounting a comeback disappeared in the 79th minute when Odoffin inadvertently turned Estevao’s cross-shot, which looked destined to miss the target, into his own net.
Chelsea nearly added a third during stoppage time, but Keeley prevented Palmer from scoring before substitute Jamie Gittens struck the base of the post.
Chelsea’s Star Attackers Help Avoid Cup Shock
Just 72 hours after Chelsea’s opening-day victory over Fulham, Alonso opted against making wholesale changes, making five alterations while retaining key players including Palmer, Rogers and James.
The Chelsea boss handed competitive debuts to Mike Penders, Pep Chavarria, Valentin Barco and Welbeck, with the latter making an immediate impact by scoring on his first appearance for the club.
Welbeck led Chelsea’s attack for 73 minutes before being replaced by Joao Pedro. He attempted four shots, all from inside the penalty area, with two finding the target.
However, Palmer and Estevao were arguably Chelsea’s standout performers, operating on either side of Welbeck. Both players created five chances, while Estevao was involved in an impressive 17 duels — at least eight more than any other player on the pitch.
The Brazilian won nine of those battles and completed four of his five attempted dribbles.
Chelsea have now advanced from each of their last 20 EFL Cup meetings against sides outside the top flight, with their last such elimination coming against Burnley on penalties in 2008.
