The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of cloudy skies, sunshine and thunderstorms across different parts of Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday.
In its weather outlook released in Abuja on Sunday, the agency predicted sunny conditions with patches of cloud over the northern region on Monday.
NiMet also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall over parts of Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna States during the morning.
Later in the afternoon or evening, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected across parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba States.
In the North Central region, parts of Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to experience thunderstorms with moderate rains in the morning.
The agency also predicted afternoon or evening thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over parts of Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the FCT.
Across the southern region, moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos and Bayelsa States in the morning, with moderate rains forecast across the region later in the day.
For Tuesday, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba States.
It also forecast afternoon or evening thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over parts of Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa States.
“For the North Central region, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected over parts of Niger, Kwara States and the Federal Capital Territory in the morning hours.
“Later during the afternoon or evening hours, thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated across the region,” it stated.
In the South, light rainfall is expected over parts of Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos and Rivers States on Tuesday morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rains across the region later in the day.
For Wednesday, the agency predicted partly cloudy conditions over the northern region, with possible morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Bauchi, Jigawa and Yobe States.
Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected across the northern region during the afternoon and evening.
NiMet also forecast sunny weather with patches of clouds over the North Central region in the morning.
“Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over the entire region later in the day.
“For the southern region, a cloudy atmosphere is expected over the region, with prospects of light rains over parts of Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Rivers States during the morning hours,” it said.
Moderate thunderstorms are expected across the southern region later on Wednesday.
The agency advised residents to take necessary precautions, particularly in areas where thunderstorms are expected, noting that strong winds could occur before rainfall and potentially cause loose objects to collide or fall.
NiMet also warned that persistent rainfall in coastal parts of southern Nigeria could result in flash flooding.
“Drivers should avoid driving or wading through floodwaters. Avoid driving in heavy rain.
“Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets. Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees,” it advised.
The agency urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports to properly plan their operations.
