A two-storey residential building has collapsed in Anambra State, with no loss of life recorded.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, confirmed the incident to journalists on Monday.
Ojukwu said the building, located in Inyaba-Umudim, Nnewi North Local Government Area, collapsed on Sunday.
The commissioner visited the scene to assess the situation and described the incident as unfortunate, while expressing relief that no fatality was recorded.
He said occupants of a nearby three-storey building had been served a notice to vacate the property to ensure their safety and allow an integrity test to be conducted.
According to Ojukwu, buildings within the neighbourhood will undergo mandatory integrity tests, while those found to be structurally unsafe will be demolished.
“The building was poorly constructed; it was built without the requisite approval of the ministry.
“It was built on a wall fence of an existing three-storey building by a developer.
“We will evacuate all the occupants of the three-store building, which shares the same compound with the collapsed building.
“We have not been able to confirm if there was any casualty,” Ojukwu said.
He added that the state government would embark on a statewide demolition exercise targeting buildings constructed on the perimeter fences of existing structures, those that violate setback regulations and those built without the required approval. (NAN)
