The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued two babies abandoned in separate locations in Abuja and launched efforts to trace their mothers or other relatives.
The incidents occurred on September 2 in Kurudu and Gwagwalada. In Kurudu, a resident, Mr Innocent, reportedly discovered a baby boy wrapped in cloth and left inside a carton after hearing the child’s cries along Obodo Street.
He alerted the police, who deployed officers and personnel from the Juvenile and Women Care Department to rescue the infant. The baby was taken to a hospital, confirmed to be in stable condition and later handed over to the Social Welfare Department.
In a similar incident later that evening, another resident, Mr Ibrahim, found a baby girl abandoned outside his gate in Gwagwalada after hearing her cry. Community members helped rescue the child before reporting the matter to the police.
Officers subsequently took the baby to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination and care, while arrangements were made to transfer her to the Social Welfare Department.
The police said investigations were ongoing to identify those responsible for abandoning the babies and locate their families.
FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, commended the residents who acted quickly to save the children and promptly alerted security authorities.
