Former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has accused the state government of disregarding the rule of law and allegedly targeting political opponents.

Ortom made the allegation while recounting his experience after leaving office, claiming that vehicles legitimately allocated to him by the state government were seized.

The former governor said he challenged the seizure in court and won the case, with the court ordering the Benue State Government to return the 23 vehicles and pay ₦5 million in damages.

“We have a government in Benue State that does not believe in the rule of law. It engages in witch-hunts and runs down its opponents. After I left office, vehicles legitimately allocated to me by the government were seized. I went to court, defeated them, and the court ordered them to pay ₦5 million in damages and return the 23 vehicles,” Ortom said.

His comments have generated reactions online, particularly regarding his disclosure that 23 vehicles had been allocated to him after leaving office.

Some social media users questioned why a former governor would require as many as 23 vehicles, while others focused on the broader issue of compliance with court orders.

One user questioned whether the vehicles were purchased with taxpayers’ money, while another argued that disregarding court orders could undermine Nigeria’s democracy.

Ortom’s comments come amid ongoing political discussions in Benue State, with his allegations directed at the state government.

Here are some of the reactions:

MOB (@Mayor_of__Benue): He’s claiming that after leaving office, the vehicle allocated to him was seized. Now he’s on national television playing the victim, trying to portray himself as the good guy, while many Benue people believe he was part of the political leadership responsible for the state’s problems. Samuel Ortom, George Akume, Gabriel Suswam, the killings, political conflicts and instability in Benue did not start today. Many people believe these political actors contributed to the environment we see today.

Obi/Kwankwaso 2027. (@Sc…): 23 vehicles? Despite me not liking the present Alia, a former governor being allocated with 23 vehicles from the state’s treasury is witchcraft. Wetin you wan use 23 vehicles do, Mr. Ortom?

Austin (🙄) (@AustinCule): Wait, State Government gave you 23 cars bought with tax payers money?

Ed Jacobs (@EdJacob3757…): Sir, you should be ashamed for calling 23 Cars legitimately given. How on earth will one man own 23 cars in a state with highest level of poverty and now wants his wife to contest for senate. A former governor at that.

MAYOR OF OWERRI (@be…): But to ask honest question why will a 23 cars be allocated to a governor talk of formal governor,Nigeria government indeed is fraud and clueless…..

Kori Akuiyibo (@iamakuiyibo): Where do i start from? The ex Governor who proudly allocated 23 cars to himself? The present Governor that confiscated them without due process? or the court that reallocated 23 cars to the ex Governor. May God grant us the fortitude to bear the shame of being called Nigerians!

Nse Equere (@insequense): These people…! This dude showed up to defend 23 cars gotten with with tax payers money. Tax payers that are deprived of all things. E sure me say better hospital no dey him clan. One he can go for treatment when he has ordinary malaria let alone cancer. Ridiculous.

Chükã✨ (@ayamchuka90): 23 cars? This is the same political class that lectures Nigerians about sacrifice while fighting tooth and nail over government cars. 23 cars for one ex-governor, yet the people he governed can’t afford one decent meal. The hypocrisy is staggering.

6foot Black Boy (@Precious…): Why were you allocated 23 cars please???????

Amibo Sweet (@chibueze2): 23 cars allocated to u as in what? Na you get Benue? This why Peter Obi is better than this people U left office Uber still collecting pension and entitlements. You guys are all thieves. If Nigeria likes, let them miss Peter Obi. Then they’d have to contend with thieves

emeka oraneche (@EmekaO…): Any system that can “legitimately” award 23 cars to a public servant(Governor) after 8yrs is a ROGUE system! I mean, what kind of work could you have rendered to warrant a whopping 23 cars(brand new) as a reward?

Ejeh Sunday M (@GeorgeSu…): The former Governor of Benue state Utom was very truthful in his interview with Arise TV…..i respected him alot

oluwasanmi Adewale (@realJa…): When wike dey use una head that time una no know abi,una begin dey shout “justice and equity” up and down, meanwhile as wike dey negotiate with Atiku for VP he dey negotiate with T-bag for ministerial appointment, now they have left u behind
