Families of 52 police officers who lost their lives while on active duty have received N26.43m in insurance benefits from the Nigeria Police Force.

The financial assistance was presented to the beneficiaries on Friday by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

The event was held at the police commissioner’s office in Owerri under the Group Life Assurance/Group Personnel Accident Scheme, a welfare programme designed to provide financial relief to families of personnel who die in the course of service.

The command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, said Bosso used the occasion to sympathise with the affected families and recognise the contributions of the deceased officers.

The statement read, “While presenting the cheques, the Commissioner of Police commiserated with the beneficiaries and acknowledged the sacrifices of the deceased officers. He assured them of the continued commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the welfare of its personnel and their families.”

Those who benefited from the payment included Felista Okorie, Gift Chidera Omini, Stella Chidinma Nwosu, Nkeiruka Okparada, Florence Offoegbu and Edith Ogochukwu Onyekwere, among others.

Representing the beneficiaries, Nwosu expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General and the Imo Commissioner of Police for the gesture.

The statement read, “She noted that the financial assistance would provide meaningful support to the families.”

The police command said the disbursement demonstrated the force’s continued commitment to supporting the dependants of officers who paid the ultimate price while serving the country.

The statement added, “The presentation took place at the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, under the Group Life Assurance/Group Personnel Accident Scheme, aimed at providing financial support to families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.”

It further stated, “The Imo State Police Command appreciates the Nigeria Police Force for sustaining welfare initiatives for families of fallen officers and reaffirms its commitment to honouring the sacrifices of personnel who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.”
