Veteran entertainer Charly Boy has disclosed how he helped Nigerian content creator Isbae U secure former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a guest on his popular YouTube programme, Curiosity Made Me Ask.
The entertainer shared the details on X on Monday while commenting on the former president’s appearance on the show.
Charly Boy said the interview was an example of what can happen when established figures make themselves accessible to younger creatives and give them the opportunity to showcase their ideas.
“Sometimes, the greatest thing you fit give a young person no be money. Na opportunity. Look at wetin happen when Baba entered Bae U’s world,” Charly Boy wrote.
He noted that Obasanjo did not approach the unconventional interview with the seriousness often associated with his public appearances but instead participated in the humour and banter.
“A man of his age and experience sat down with a young man whose style dey completely different from wetin he is used to. Baba no just sit there looking serious. He matched the energy, played along and showed Nigerians another side of himself,” he said.
Charly Boy subsequently revealed that he was instrumental in getting the former president to appear on Isbae U’s show.
“And who helped make that connection happen? CharlyBoy. Fada believed in the young people behind that show enough to pull Baba into their space,” he said.
The appearance attracted widespread attention, particularly because of the unusual interaction between the former president and the young host.
During the programme, Isbae U humorously claimed that Obasanjo had previously worked for him and that he was responsible for the former president’s salary, food and accommodation while he was at Aso Rock between 1999 and 2007.
Obasanjo joined in the joke and answered questions about several personalities in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. He said he was unfamiliar with Don Jazzy, Poco Lee and Carter Efe, which led to further playful exchanges during the interview.
Reflecting on the significance of the encounter, Charly Boy urged older Nigerians to provide practical support and opportunities for younger people instead of merely advising them to succeed.
“To the older generation: don’t only tell young people to succeed. Give them room. Open doors. Recommend them. Trust them with opportunities,” he wrote.
He also encouraged young Nigerians to develop themselves so they can make the most of opportunities when they arise.
“To the younger generation: don’t wait for somebody to hand you a future. Build something worth believing in. When opportunity comes, be ready,” he said.
Charly Boy said meaningful cooperation between different generations could create opportunities for both younger and older people.
“When generations support each other, everybody gets to grow. Na so legacy suppose work,” he wrote.
