A Nigerian woman identified as Enori has apologised after admitting that she used artificial intelligence to create an image falsely showing an itel Power Tank as having exploded.
The image was shared on X earlier in the week alongside a claim that the device had exploded because it was overcharged. The post later gained attention before Enori took it down.
Explaining herself in a subsequent apology, she acknowledged that the incident never occurred and that the image was AI-generated.
“Hi, good morning, everybody. I made a post three days ago claiming that itel solar fan exploded and that it was overcharging, which I used AI to create. It didn’t happen, and I’m very, very sorry to the itel team and to the itel customers,” she said.
Enori said she regretted the post and apologised to customers and others who may have believed the image was authentic.
“I’m very, very sorry. I know what it feels like to have a brand and for someone to just try to bring it down, and it was never my intention. I didn’t know it would go this far. I didn’t even think of it, and I’ll never do it again.”
She also stressed that the image did not represent a real incident involving the product.
“To the incoming customers that may have felt deceived, or angry, or felt like or believed that it was real, it was not real. It was AI and I deleted it,” she said.
The apology followed a warning from itel over the circulation of the fabricated image. The company had raised concerns about the use of AI-generated content to create the impression that its Power Tank had exploded after being overcharged.
itel said it would take appropriate legal steps against deliberate attempts to spread fabricated information capable of misleading customers or damaging its reputation.
The company describes the Power Tank as a portable backup power solution designed to provide electricity during outages. It says the device uses lithium iron phosphate batteries and includes protections against issues such as overheating, overcharging, overloading and short circuits.
No verified report has established that an itel Power Tank was involved in the explosion depicted in the AI-generated image.
