Portuguese FA plans peace meeting with Ronaldo, coach Jesus over growing rift
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is reportedly preparing an emergency meeting with Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus next week as it seeks to resolve their growing disagreement and prevent the 41-year-old from ending his international career.
According to Marca, federation officials will meet Ronaldo with his agreement in an effort to improve relations between the parties.
The FPF reportedly wants to repair its relationship with the veteran forward and settle the dispute before recent developments bring his Portugal career to an abrupt end.
How the dispute escalated
Tensions intensified after Ronaldo remained on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway.
The situation worsened after Jesus publicly reaffirmed his authority over tactical decisions during a press conference, saying no player would influence his managerial plans. He also confirmed that Ronaldo would be benched against Denmark.
Following the press conference and a conversation with FPF president Pedro Proenca, Ronaldo reportedly left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen and missed the Denmark match, which Portugal won 4-2 without him.
Ronaldo’s position
Media reports suggest Ronaldo felt used and disrespected following the sudden change to his expected role in the team.
He had reportedly agreed to feature in two of the four international matches scheduled during the break, making the decision to leave him out of the subsequent fixtures particularly significant.
The situation was further complicated by the federation’s previous request for Ronaldo to remain with the national team through 2027.
Ronaldo has said he would eventually explain his decision to leave the squad.
“In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that motivated me to leave the national team to which I have always dedicated myself. Now is the time to wish Portugal and all my teammates, without exception, good luck,” he wrote on social media.
The path forward
The FPF initially focused its public response on the team’s upcoming sporting commitments, saying: “The entire delegation remains fully focused on the national team’s upcoming commitments and achieving the defined objectives.”
However, federation officials reportedly believe Ronaldo deserves a respectful and dignified conclusion to his international career because of his contribution to Portuguese football.
The proposed meeting next week could give both sides an opportunity to address their differences and discuss Ronaldo’s future with the national team.
