Zidane hails Ronaldo’s career amid Portugal controversy

Zinedine Zidane has backed Cristiano Ronaldo and praised the Portugal star for his achievements as uncertainty continues over his relationship with the national team.

Ronaldo was recently at the centre of attention after he left Portugal’s Nations League camp following their 2-1 victory over Norway, a game he watched from the bench.

His decision to leave came after reports of a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time.

The 41-year-old forward has said he will explain his side of the incident when the time is right.

Jesus has also suggested that Ronaldo could return when Portugal regroup in November, although it is still unclear whether the latest situation will affect his future with the team.

Zidane, who worked closely with Ronaldo during his spell as Real Madrid manager, has now offered strong support for his former player.

The Frenchman coached Ronaldo between 2016 and 2018, a period in which Real Madrid won three Champions League trophies and the LaLiga title, among other major honours.

Reflecting on Ronaldo’s impact during their time together, Zidane said:

“He made me win incredible things,” Zidane said when asked about Ronaldo’s current situation.

“I think we have to salute his great career; what he has done is exceptional.

“I was lucky enough to have him with me. Hats off to Cristiano!

“I still have a lot of respect in general for all the players, but even more so for those with whom I spent time, and especially Cristiano, who still made us win a lot of things.”

Zidane’s comments highlight the strong relationship between the former Real Madrid manager and Ronaldo, even as the Portuguese forward faces questions over his current situation with the national team.
