Several people are feared dead after a helicopter crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, causing panic among residents of the riverine community.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remained unclear at the time of filing this report.

It was also not immediately known how many people were aboard the helicopter or whether anyone survived the crash.

Residents reportedly rushed to the scene after news of the incident spread across the community.

The crash heightened anxiety in Igbokoda as residents sought information about what happened and whether those aboard the aircraft could be rescued.

A resident who spoke about the incident confirmed that a helicopter had gone down in the area.

“Yes, it’s true. A helicopter just crashed now at Igbokoda, Ondo state,” the resident said.

However, the exact crash site and extent of the damage could not immediately be independently verified.

There was also no official confirmation of the number of casualties at the time of publication.

The Ondo State Police Command was reportedly yet to receive full details of the incident.

Police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh said he was unaware of the crash but would make inquiries.

Igbokoda is a major coastal community in Ilaje Local Government Area and serves as the council headquarters. It is also an important commercial centre in the riverine part of Ondo State.

The community is located within the state’s oil-producing belt, where helicopters are frequently used for offshore and oil-related operations to transport personnel and equipment across coastal areas of the Niger Delta and adjoining regions.

Igbokoda has also faced other emergencies in recent times.

In August, flooding affected several parts of Ilaje Local Government Area, with Igbokoda among the communities severely affected.

Reports from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies indicated that parts of Igbokoda, including areas around the naval base and local government headquarters, were submerged during the flooding.

The latest helicopter crash has added another emergency to the challenges confronting residents of the coastal community.

Authorities have yet to disclose the identity of the helicopter operator.

It was also not immediately clear whether the aircraft was involved in an oil and gas operation, private transportation or another assignment.

Nigerian aviation authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash once the aircraft and relevant flight information are examined.

Such investigations typically examine the condition of the aircraft, its flight history, weather conditions, maintenance records and other factors that may have contributed to an accident.

Nigeria has recorded several fatal helicopter accidents in the past.

One notable incident occurred in Lagos in August 2020, when a Bell 206B3 helicopter operated by Quorum Aviation crashed in the Opebi area, killing all three people aboard.

A preliminary investigation later examined issues surrounding the aircraft’s fuel and flight operations.

There have also been helicopter incidents involving offshore operations in waters around the Niger Delta.

In one earlier incident, a Bristow helicopter carrying 11 people ditched in the sea off the coast near Igbokoda. All those on board were rescued after nearby vessels responded to the emergency.

For now, there has been no official confirmation of the number of people killed or injured in Monday’s crash.

Further information is expected from the Ondo State Government, police authorities, emergency agencies and aviation officials as efforts to reach the crash site continue.

Residents of Igbokoda are also awaiting confirmation of what happened and the identities of those who may have been involved.
