[TECHNOLOGY] How hackers could watch you without your knowledge

That tiny camera on your laptop may look harmless, but if hackers gain access to your computer, they could use it to spy on you without your permission.

Many people use webcams for video calls, online meetings and content creation without thinking much about their privacy. However, cybercriminals can sometimes take control of a computer’s camera by using malicious software.

Hackers may trick people into downloading harmful files, clicking suspicious links or installing fake applications. If the computer becomes infected, the software could allow them to access certain parts of the device, including the webcam.

In some cases, victims may not realise that their computers have been compromised.

Does the camera light always come on?

Many laptops have a small light that comes on when the webcam is in use. Some also have a physical cover that blocks the camera.

However, the way camera lights work depends on the device. So, you should not rely on the light alone to know whether your webcam is safe.

If your camera suddenly turns on when you are not using an application that needs it, it is worth checking your computer. However, this does not automatically mean someone is spying on you.

How can you protect yourself?

There are simple steps you can take to protect your webcam from hackers.

First, keep your computer and its software updated. Updates often fix security problems that hackers could exploit.

Avoid downloading applications from unknown websites or opening suspicious email attachments. Also, check which applications have permission to use your camera and microphone, and remove access from those that do not need it.

Another simple step is to cover your webcam when you are not using it. You can use a laptop privacy shutter or a suitable webcam cover.

This prevents the camera from capturing images, even if someone manages to activate it remotely. However, it will not stop anyone from accessing your microphone or other files if your device has been compromised.

If you suspect that someone has accessed your webcam without permission, check your installed applications and camera settings, run a security scan and seek help from a trusted computer technician if necessary.

Webcam spying is a real cybersecurity risk, but it does not mean hackers can easily watch everyone through their computers.

Taking a few simple precautions can help protect your privacy and make it harder for cybercriminals to access your device.
