The Kebbi State Government has commenced an erosion control project in Badariya and Dukku Mallah communities in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area through the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) initiative.

Governor Nasir Idris officially flagged off the multi-million-naira project on Wednesday, describing it as a major intervention to tackle persistent erosion threatening lives, property and farmlands in the affected communities.

Idris expressed optimism that the project would provide a lasting solution to the erosion challenges upon completion while improving the environmental condition of Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.

He explained that although the project was not included in his campaign promises, his administration considered it essential because of its significance to residents’ safety, welfare and economic wellbeing.

The governor noted that the intervention was being executed under ACReSAL, a World Bank-assisted programme aimed at addressing environmental degradation and improving resilience in vulnerable landscapes.

“The successful completion of this project will significantly reduce erosion problems in the affected communities, protect farmlands and create a more conducive environment for agricultural activities,” the governor said.

Idris also expressed confidence in the contractor responsible for the project, describing the company as a reputable multinational firm with specialised expertise in erosion control.

“I have confidence in the company handling this project because of its specialisation in erosion control. My administration is determined to rescue the people of Dukku Mallah and Badariya from the persistent challenges posed by erosion,” he said.

The governor assured residents that his administration would closely supervise and monitor the project to ensure adherence to approved specifications, quality standards and completion timelines.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering people-focused projects that address pressing community challenges, improve living conditions and promote economic activities across the state.

Idris called on residents of the benefiting communities to cooperate with the contractor and relevant project officials. He also urged them to take collective responsibility for protecting and maintaining the infrastructure after its completion.

Residents of the affected communities, who turned out in large numbers for the flag-off ceremony, praised the governor for the intervention, describing it as timely relief from the persistent erosion threatening their homes, farmlands and livelihoods.
