Popular Kannywood actor dies after prolonged illness

Popular Kannywood actor Yakubu Mato, widely known by his screen name Malam Nata’ala, has passed away.

According to reports, the veteran actor died on Sunday night after battling a prolonged illness.

Mato rose to fame for his portrayal of an almajiri school teacher in Arewa24’s Hausa drama series, Dadin Kowa — a role that earned him admiration from viewers across Northern Nigeria.

Confirming the news, one of the series’ writers, Fauziya D. Sulaiman, shared on Facebook, writing: “Innalillahi wa’inna ilaihi rajiun, just now the news of the death of Malam Nata’al. May Allah forgive him, may Allah make his sickness an apology.”

Before achieving fame through Dadin Kowa, the late actor had appeared in several Kannywood films. Known for his comedic versatility, he often played the role of a loud yet humorous Qur’anic teacher dealing with domestic tensions between two wives.

In recent months, concerns about his health had prompted public fundraising efforts, with reported support from both the Yobe State Government and authorities in Niger Republic.

In a condolence message, the Yobe State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Ya Jalo Badama, described Mato’s death as a significant loss to both Kannywood and the political community.

“Mahaluki Na Ta’ala was a respected figure known for his immense contributions to the entertainment industry and his active participation during the campaign of His Excellency, Governor (Dr) Mai Mala Buni CON.

“His passing is a great loss not only to the film industry but also to the APC family and the entire people of Yobe State,” the statement partly read.

She extended condolences to the government and people of Yobe State, as well as the Potiskum Emirate Council and Potiskum Local Government Area.

Originally from Yobe State, Malam Nata’ala was a prominent figure in the Chamama comedy era alongside the late Rabilu Musa (Dan Ibro) before the rise of Arewa24.

Details regarding his burial arrangements have not yet been announced.
