The chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Aminu Yusuf, has died at the age of 66.
Yusuf passed away on Friday, about eight months after taking over as the substantive chairman of the commission. He was born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State.
The circumstances surrounding his death had not been disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
Yusuf assumed office on December 2, 2025, after President Bola Tinubu appointed him in October of the same year. He subsequently became the eighth substantive chairman of the NPC.
Before his appointment to the commission, Yusuf served as special adviser on political affairs to Abubakar Bello, former governor of Niger State, between 2019 and 2023.
He also held several political and public service positions, including chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area, member of the Niger State House of Assembly and board member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) from 2005 to 2007.
Yusuf began his education at LEA Primary School, Zungeru, before proceeding to Federal Government College, Odogbolu, Ogun State.
In 1983, he obtained a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) from the College of Education, Minna. He later earned a B.Sc. (Ed) in Biology from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1988.
He further obtained a postgraduate diploma in public administration in 2001 and a master’s degree in international affairs and diplomacy from ABU in 2010.
His death comes at a significant period for the NPC, which is responsible for population-related planning and data management in Nigeria.
