President Tinubu urges young Nigerians to shun japa

President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerian youths to channel their energy and talents into developing the country rather than seeking opportunities abroad.

In his Democracy Day speech on Friday, the President urged young people to take ownership of Nigeria’s future, arguing that lasting national progress is achieved by citizens who remain committed to solving challenges at home.

“To our young people: Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here. Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship.”

The appeal comes as increasing numbers of young Nigerians continue to relocate overseas under the popular “japa” trend, driven by the search for better economic and career prospects.

Tinubu said his administration is focused on creating opportunities that can improve livelihoods and give citizens reasons to believe in the country’s future.

“Democracy must be felt in the pocket,” he said.

The President cited government interventions in education, agriculture and small business development as part of efforts to stimulate growth and create jobs.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey, Tinubu said every generation is faced with a defining mission and must rise to meet it.

“Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence. The generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity.”
