Charly Boy weighs in on Wizkid, Seun Kuti clash over Fela comparison

Charly Boy has stepped into the online exchange between singers Wizkid and Seun Kuti, the son of the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

The disagreement followed Wizkid’s claim of being greater than Fela during a clash with Seun.

Seun, who fired back with a sarcastic remark describing Wizkid as a “short man,” had earlier criticised the singer’s fanbase, accusing them of disrespecting his father’s legacy by comparing Wizkid to Fela.

In a post on his X handle on Wednesday, Charly Boy described the comparison as needless.

The 75-year-old singer and activist acknowledged the immense success of both artistes but stressed that their influence and missions in music are fundamentally different.

He explained that Wizkid’s music, including his global project ‘Made in Lagos,’ is aimed at entertainment and spreading joy, while Fela’s work was deeply rooted in social awareness, confronting injustice and societal problems.

“Wizkid dey sing for crowd, stadium full, light dey flash, money dey talk, awards dey stack, world dey shout: Starboy! Fela no need spotlight, him own be fire for chest, kalakuta be him stage. Truth be hin microphone,” he wrote.

“One dey rule charts, one dey rule conscience. One dey give sweet escape, one dey give hard reality.”

On the debate over who is bigger, Charly Boy said the answer depends on individual values.

He noted that by measures of “fame and cruise,” Wizkid stands out, but by “fight and freedom,” Fela remains unmatched.

“Different time, different battle, different kind of greatness. No be who big pass… Na who touch your soul pass. 🎶🔥,” he added.
