The veteran Nigerian musician, John Odafe Asiemo, better known as Daddy Showkey, has spoke about how he discovered his musical talent.
In an interview with “The Honest Bunch” podcast, the “Ghetto Soldier” reportedly revealed that he chose to pursue music as a career after hearing someone else’s recommendation while working at a theme park.
Daddy Showkey claimed that although he was dubious about the idea, many people enjoyed his songs when he tried to perform.
He said,
“I was working in the motor park as a ticketer when someone told me I have a good voice and that I should consider becoming a musician.
“At first, I was sceptical because I didn’t know how to sing but when I attempted it, I discovered that everyone liked it so that was how I became a musician.”
In response to the debate surrounding young musicians’ failure to acknowledge the influence of music icons on the success of their careers, Daddy Showkey stated he was not interested in receiving recognition for having paved the way for other musicians.
He went on to say that it is up to the upcoming artists who have profited from his legacy to accept and give him credit.
In a differnt story, Daddy Showkey has shared an account of how he narrowly escaped being lynched to death during his involvement in gang activities in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
According to him, he and a group of young men discovered a gun at a refuse dump and began using it to terrorize people. This continued until one fateful day when they were caught and nearly lynched.
Speaking in the teaser for the upcoming episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, Daddy Showkey recalled that he and his gang had already been tied up and were awaiting being set ablaze when they were miraculously saved.
