Funke Akindele’s latest movie breaks box office record with N206m in it’s opening weekend

Nollywood’s highest-grossing one-day performance record of ₦87.8 million and the largest opening weekend ever recorded of ₦206 million were both broken by Funke Akindele once again.

In an official announcement by the film distributors, the film made a jaw-dropping ₦206 million in its opening weekend. Not only that, but it also raked in an impressive ₦87.8 million on its first day alone, and on its open day, ELJ made ₦45.2 million, earning its place as the biggest opening day for a Nollywood film according to Nigeria’s Box Office.

The post reads:

“A legendary record-breaking moment in the history of Nollywood #EverybodyLovesJenifa has smashed its way to the top with the highest-grossing of all time and strongest opening in 2024. Big cheers to the cast, crew, and you for making history with us.”

With a mix of comedy, drama, and some unexpected twists, the film stars  Falz, Omotunde ‘Lolo’ Adebowale-David, Olayode Juliana, Chimezie Imo, Layi Wasabi, Bisola Aiyeola, Jackie Appiah, and Omowunmi Dada.

In a similar story,Funke Akindele reached a noteworthy milestone before her most recent hit film, Everybody Loves Jenifa, premieres in the UK.

The movie, which is scheduled to open on December 20, 2024, has sold out two theatres, becoming the first Nigerian film to accomplish so in the United Kingdom.

On Sunday, December 15th, Akindele posted the incredible news on her Instagram page and thanked her admirers, whom she lovingly calls “Jenifans.”

“Jenifans!!!!!!! You’ve outdone yourselves again. History made as the second screen for Everybody Loves Jenifa December 20th UK premiere is SOLD OUT.“

The film’s success has been hailed as a landmark achievement for Nigerian cinema, reflecting the growing international appeal of Nollywood productions.

Nile Media Entertainment, the international distributor of the film, also highlighted the achievement on social media, describing it as a historic moment.

“History made. Everybody Loves Jenifa becomes the first Nigerian film to sell out 2 screens before premiere. Jenifans, you’ve shattered records back-to-back ahead of the December 20th UK premiere. Thank you all for your unwavering support and love,” the distributor wrote.
