Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage admits that her early days in the Nigerian music industry were riddled with difficulties due to her provocative clothing and music style.
Tiwa Savage talked about how her sexy image has led to criticism, song bans, and even performing opportunities being denied in a recent interview with BET Talks.
She revealed that comparable discrimination against female artists existed in the industry.
Tiwa Savage went into further detail about the unfair treatment she received, including being ignored and not being allowed to perform soundchecks at events.
She related stories of being turned away from performances because of her attire, highlighting the obstacles she had to get beyond to become a well-known performer.
She declared that she would continue to push boundaries by wearing even more revealing clothing, refusing to conform to societal expectations.
According to her:
“When I first moved back, I would turn up at a show and they would say I can’t perform because my outfit was too risqué.
“It was a cultural issue. Even some of my first music videos were not played on the television because they were considered indecent. I wasn’t even wearing bikinis. Despite the setbacks, I was still stubborn. My dresses were getting more revealing. It was just getting worse. They were bashing me online.
“It was funny because the females were secretly falling in love with me and my style. They couldn’t deny. My fanbase, my followers, was growing. So they had to put me on shows and play my music because there was a demand for it.”
In another story, Tiwa Savage discusses her choice of actors for on-screen kisses .
In an audacious and direct interview on CNN African Voices with Larry Madowo, Savage spelt out exactly what she looked for in a romantic partnership with her co-stars.
She made it clear that she detests kissing scenes with actors that she thinks ugly and that her co-star’s physical attractiveness is a non-negotiable.
The single mother was open about the kinds of acting partners she preferred. In response to a question concerning her ideal co-star, Savage stated that she would be open to working with any actor who satisfied her physical requirements.
The music superstar has openly expressed her intense discomfort with repeatedly performing kissing scenes alongside co-stars she doesn’t find physically attractive.
To make matters worse, she admits that the experience becomes even more unbearable if the paycheck for enduring such awkward and unappealing moments on set isn’t substantial enough to make it worthwhile..
