The Nigerian actress widely known as Aunty Ajara in the Yoruba film industry, Ajara Lasisi, has died.

Her family confirmed that she passed away in the early hours of Thursday.

The announcement was made by her brother, Ridwan Lasisi, through an emotional video message in which he expressed the family’s appreciation to colleagues and supporters within the film industry.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Ridwan thanked the public for the overwhelming support they received and appealed for donations meant for her medical treatment to stop.

“Good morning to you all. My name is Ridwan Lasisi. I am a brother to Ajara. The doctor confirmed to us this morning that Ajara has passed on,” he said.

“All the families, we are using this period to appreciate you all. We appreciate the president and all industry members.

“We also use this opportunity to appeal to those sending money not to send it anymore. The one we are contributing for her sake is no more. Thank you so much. We do not want you to send money into that account again.”

The actress’ health condition had come to public attention last week after her colleague, Ronke Oshodi-Oke, made an appeal for financial assistance.

Oshodi-Oke disclosed that Lasisi was critically ill, dependent on oxygen support, and that her condition continued to worsen despite intensive medical care and significant expenses.

Aunty Ajara was known for her powerful and motherly portrayals in culturally rooted films. She featured in several notable productions, including ‘Gingerrr’, ‘Queen Lateefah’, and ‘Isiti’.

In 2025, the actress opened up about a painful personal loss, revealing that she had previously lost a child.
