One killed in APC senatorial primary as shooting mars Delta PDP primaries

The senatorial primaries of All Progressives Congress (APC) for Delta north senatorial district was, on Wednesday, disrupted by students of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba, following the alleged killing of one student by police officers.

The victim was said to be a 200-level student of Industrial Technical Education. The incident jolted the contestants, including wife of a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mrs. Nneamaka Ali, former member of House of Representatives, Mrs. Doris Uboh and Mr. Gabriel Oyibode.

This is even as heavy shooting characterised the House of Representatives primaries for Aniocha/Oshimili constituency of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held, in Asaba.

Incumbent member of the House, Mrs. Amaechi Mrakpor, was alleged to have instigated the shooting when she allegedly disrupted counting of votes after she had scored 226 with bulk of uncounted ballots for her opponent, Mr. Ndudi Elumelu.

Following the shooting incident, Mrs. Mrakpor was whisked away by the police, while officials conducting the exercise protected the materials from invaders.

The senatorial primaries of the APC which postponed from Tuesday also had a change of venue from a hotel in Ogwashi-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area to the Federal College.

Speaker of the Student Union Government, Onochie Vincent Ubani said the students’ Union leaders cash in on the opportunity of the election to boost internally generated revenue by collecting rate of N100 from hawkers who stormed the place to make brisk business.

Ubani stated that as the collection was progressively going on, they heard gunshots from nowhere, only to discover that the victim was down in the pool of his own blood.

He however, noted that there was no form of argument or quarrel with the policemen stationed at the venue to provide security for the APC primary.

As result of the tragic incident, the exercise was disrupted, as angry students invaded the place and chase out party officials, delegates and others.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Mustafa Mohammad confirmed that one person died at the APC senatorial primaries, adding that his men were presently sorting things out as regard the shooting at the PDP primaries.
