Police arrest fake lawyer while arguing client’s case in court

The police in Lagos have arrested a fake lawyer, Uche Nwajiakwu, at the Ojo Magistrate Court.

Nwajiakwu was arrested on May 25 by police undercover operatives when he appeared before a magistrate to secure bail for his ‘client,’ the police said in a statement on Sunday.

While he was arguing his bail application before the court, the police said, other lawyers present in the court observed that he lacked knowledge of the process, which aroused their suspicion.

The police said its investigations showed that the suspect did not study law in any Nigerian university or elsewhere outside the country.

The suspect fell in love with law practice when a friend of his commissioned him to act as a lawyer in order to serve his tenant a quit notice,” the police said.

He was handsomely rewarded after the deed and since then, there was no looking back. He has also been practising as a fake lawyer since 2015.”

Imohimi Edgar, the Lagos State Police Commissioner, said the arrest would be the second incident at the Ojo Magistrate Court and warned professional bodies to always scrutinise their members.
