No fewer than 1,500 women and children in Kano State have benefited from free medical care during a two-day outreach organised by the Women Leaders Support Advancement Group, aimed at improving access to healthcare for vulnerable groups.
The programme, held at the Sharada Primary Healthcare Centre, brought together beneficiaries from all 44 local government areas of the state. According to a statement by WLSA national coordinator, Fauziyah Buhari-Ado, services provided included “free medical consultations, medications, diagnostic tests, and referrals for serious conditions.”
The initiative responds to ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s healthcare system, where many low-income households still struggle to access affordable and quality medical services. While government efforts to strengthen primary healthcare continue, gaps in coverage and funding still persist.
In addition to medical services, the group also distributed food items, including immune boosters and nutrient-rich supplies, to support overall wellbeing.
Buhari-Ado described the outreach as more than just an event, saying, “Today’s programme is more than an event; it is a promise to bridge gaps in healthcare access and restore dignity to our people,” and adding, “Healthy women build strong families, and healthy children secure a brighter future for Kano State.”
She also said the intervention aligns with government development goals focused on improving healthcare for women, children, and the elderly, while calling for more support from individuals and organisations to expand similar programmes nationwide.
The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Yusuf, praised the initiative as timely, while representatives of the Emir of Kano also commended the effort, noting its importance to women and children in the state.
Medical officials confirmed that 64 health workers were deployed for the exercise, offering services such as screening and treatment for common illnesses, as well as HIV testing and counselling.
