16 Lawmakers sacked over move to impeach Zamfara speaker

Seven of the twenty-four members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly suspended sixteen members on Monday after they threatened to impeach Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki last Thursday.

They accused the members of breaking into the offices of the clerk of the house and sergeant at arms, as well as trashing things at the Assembly Complex.

The House, led by Speaker Moriki, declared last Thursday’s parliamentary session unconstitutional.

They urged citizens of the North-West state to dismiss the widespread reports that the speaker had been suspended.

The lawmakers also accused some senior politicians from outside the state of financing them in order to undermine Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration.

Eighteen members, led by what they termed as Speaker Pro-Tempo, suspended Moriki last Thursday due to his protracted absence from the state, which coincided with the revival of bandit activity throughout the state.
