2027: PDP faction rejects Tinubu endorsement, pushes unity

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Tanimu Turaki has declared that backing President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 general elections would be “immoral and unjust.”

This position was made known by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, during an appearance on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Thursday.

“It is improper, it is immoral, it is unjust, it is unfair for an opposition party of the standing of the Peoples Democratic Party to endorse the presidency or the presidential candidature of President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC,” he said.

Ememobong expressed confidence that the party’s reconciliation efforts would be driven by sound judgment rather than emotions.
“So it’s part of the underpinning principle. We are hoping that reason will prevail over emotions,” he added.

He emphasised that the Turaki-led bloc would only support reconciliation moves that reinforce the PDP’s position as a strong opposition party, not one that becomes subordinate.

Meanwhile, the party’s internal crisis appears to be easing, as reconciliation talks have resumed between the Turaki faction and the group aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ahead of the March 29–30, 2026 national convention.

Turaki, whose faction has the backing of several PDP governors, confirmed that fresh discussions aimed at resolving differences and uniting aggrieved members began recently.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, he revealed that the talks, which started on Tuesday night, were already showing encouraging signs.

He noted that party leaders were aware of the consequences of the dispute, particularly regarding timelines outlined in the Electoral Act, and urged all stakeholders to act in the best interest of the party.

The former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs also expressed optimism that the crisis, including disagreements with the Wike faction, could be resolved.

Turaki said he was committed to pursuing peace through all available means and disclosed that pending court cases would be withdrawn once an agreement is reached.

Addressing the issue of compromise, he said, “On the issue of compromise, we are willing to bend as far as our necks and backs allow. We are ready to make all sorts of sacrifices in the overall interest of the party. PDP will not die. Everything possible will be done to make this reconciliation work; nothing is impossible.

‘’Issues such as attendance at the convention are among those to be discussed. Once these matters are deliberated, the parties and delegates will decide whether the convention needs to continue. These issues are on the table and will be considered carefully.”
