A 25-year-old medical doctor participating in the National Youth Service Corps, Wisdom Oghenetega Enakirerhi, has reportedly died after his repeated pleas for sick leave were allegedly turned down, a development that has sparked widespread reactions across social media.

Reports say the young doctor became critically ill during his service year and requested a three-week leave to seek medical attention and recuperate. Despite the reported seriousness of his condition, the application was allegedly not approved.

Sharing details of the incident, Dr. Akpoyibo said Wisdom had dedicated seven years to studying medicine, completed his one-year internship, and was serving his compulsory NYSC year when his health worsened.

“A 25-year-old medical doctor who spent seven years in medical school, completed a one-year internship, and was serving in the NYSC was sick, asked for permission for a good three weeks’ leave, but he was not granted permission, and now he is dead,”

The report also claimed that the deceased’s father and brother, both medical doctors, appealed to the authorities to allow him return home for proper treatment, but their request was allegedly declined.

According to the account, Wisdom was eventually granted approval to travel home only a few days before his death.

The incident has since generated widespread outrage, with many Nigerians demanding an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and urging the authorities to hold those responsible accountable if the allegations are confirmed.
