The Adamawa State Police Command has apprehended two men suspected of operating a scheme that allegedly tricked buyers into paying for counterfeit mobile phones disguised as genuine devices.

The suspects, Audu Abubakar and Nasiru Hassan, who live on Bauchi Street in Yola North Local Government Area, were arrested after several customers reported being duped with phones that looked authentic but failed to function.

Police spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the arrests followed an investigation launched after victims lodged complaints with the command.

“Operatives of the Adamawa State Police Command have arrested two suspects for allegedly defrauding unsuspecting customers by selling them dummy phones instead of original working devices,” the statement read.

According to the police, officers recovered a number of dummy phones and other items believed to be connected to the alleged fraud.

Nguroje said the Commissioner of Police, Kabiru Hassan, had directed investigators to conclude their findings promptly and ensure the suspects are prosecuted if found culpable.

The command also urged residents to exercise caution when buying mobile phones, advising them to purchase devices from recognised dealers and to inspect phones carefully before making payment.

“Customers are advised to test devices thoroughly and demand receipts before making payment,” the statement added.
