The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited, Prof. Nasir Abdulsalam, has secured a 20-year Gas Supply Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, a development expected to remove a major obstacle to the commencement of steel production at the Ajaokuta Steel Plant.

The agreement guarantees gas supply to the steel complex for the next two decades, addressing one of the key requirements repeatedly identified by prospective investors for the plant’s operationalisation.

The deal is being viewed as a major step towards ending the 46-year delay that has hindered the development of Nigeria’s steel industry. Since its establishment, the Ajaokuta Steel Plant has remained largely dormant despite several attempts by successive administrations to revive it.

Industry stakeholders have described the agreement as a significant milestone under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, whose Renewed Hope Agenda prioritises industrialisation, economic diversification and infrastructure development.

With the gas supply challenge addressed, observers say the agreement is expected to boost investor confidence and facilitate the completion of outstanding requirements needed for the commencement of full-scale steel production.

Analysts also believe the development could stimulate industrial growth, create employment opportunities, strengthen local manufacturing, reduce reliance on imported steel and position Ajaokuta Steel Company as a key driver of Nigeria’s economic transformation.

For many Nigerians, the agreement represents renewed hope that the long-delayed steel project may finally begin operations and fulfil its anticipated role in the country’s industrial development.
