BREAKING: ASUU commences preparations for nationwide strike, declares Monday lecture-free day
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged its chapters across the country to educate the public about the union’s dispute with the Federal Government. This is because it announced Monday, February 7, 2022, as a lecture-free day in order to raise awareness.
Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the Union’s National President, revealed this in an interview on Saturday evening.
Newsclickng.com reports that the directive to the chapters of ASUU comes less than a week after the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari(retd.) pledged the commitment of his administration to fulfilling the agreement with the union.
Buhari made the pledge as members of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council paid him a visit to resolve outstanding concerns.
Buhari made the vow while pleading with the union to be patient and to examine present economic circumstances.
ASUU’s most recent nationwide strike began in March 2020 and lasted until December 2020, when a Memorandum of Action was signed.
However, a year after signing the MoA, ASUU accused the government of failing to fulfil its side of the bargain and threatened to mobilise for another strike immediately.
